Unwrapping the New Season of OPL

Summer Season of Online Pairs now Open!

The NSW Online Pairs League is a state-wide IMPs Pairs competition particularly aimed at non-metropolitan players. It's played on the RealBridge platform every Thursday night for 8 weeks. There have already been two successful seasons (see Spring season results). The Summer season commences on 12 January. This flyer has detailed information.

In case you need convincing, here are some of the reasons you should really want to play:
  • short (12 board) sessions (start at 7:30 pm, no more than 1.5 hours)
  • separate divisions for players at every level
  • a full round-robin with North-South and East-West winners in each division (a truly fair IMPs pairs event)
  • half-price entry (only $20/player for 8 weeks – what a bargain) for less experienced players (<100 masterpoints) whom NSWBA is keen to encourage
  • Red masterpoints
  • substitutes allowed for matches where life gets in the way
  • NSWBA returns $10 to the NSW registered Home Club of each participant!
 Enter now via MyABF.

State Open Teams Finals

Where City meets Country

State Open Teams Finals - 10* Teams from the NSWBA, the Sydney Metropolitan zone, the Outer Metropolitan, Northern, Southern and Western zones will play in the John Arkinstall State Teams Round Robin on Friday and Saturday 9-10 December.

* Unfortunately there is no representative from the Western zone, so there are only 9 teams.

On Sunday 11 December the top two teams will play in the Final and the top two Country Teams will play in the Country Teams final.

The Summery Swiss Pairs Congress will be held in parallel on Sunday 11th December. This event is open to everyone! Enter via MyABF.

The NSWBA Tournament Calendar now allows you to filter the list of congresses so that you can see which are face-to-face and which are online - the online congresses can be filtered by platform.

For Club Congresses Organisers, applications for 2023 congresses are now open. Please submit your application to Pauline Gumby, the Congress and State Events Co-ordinator.

Directors Course

For Clubs
If you represent a club and would like to host a Directors Course, please contact NSWBA for further details.

For players
To better understand situations that arise when a director is called, Matthew McManus has explained several of them in detail, together with the reasons behind the rulings. His articles are written from the perspective of players - you may find them helpful in your quest to be a better congress player. Review his columns here >
CONGRESS PSYCHE REGISTER
The NSWBA has established a central psyche register for all congresses held in NSW.

The laws permit players to deviate from their systemic agreements so long as the partner of the player who does so has no greater reason to be aware of this deviation than the opponents. Once your partnership has a history of deviating from its agreements in a certain situation you are required to inform your opponents of this tendency.

If you feel that your opponents have psyched against you, please email details of the hand to the psyche register – no action will be taken against players who are reported to the psyche register but once a pair has multiple entries in the psyche register, congress directors will be informed so that they are aware of this history when making their rulings.

A form which can be used for submissions is available HERE.
