Confidence Returns
The Gold Coast Congress was a major success and this has (hopefully!) led to a return of confidence in F2F bridge. However, because of contractual obligations etc, the Congress ran at a loss. Therefore, a fundraising Rescue Series is being run on RealBridge. The first events were widely supported by congress players from all over the country. If you missed out, the online Rescue Series 2 will be held on 9th - 10th April and Rescue Series 3 on 7th - 8th May.

The next two National Congresses are also scheduled to be face-to-face:
Please find the details on MyABF.
Beginning with this issue, we will interview our NSW Team representatives who are going to compete in the ANC (Australian National Championships) in Adelaide in July. In this issue, we have interviewed Giselle Mundell, Rena Kaplan and Avril Zets from the Women's Team.

The 2nd stage of the Open Interstate Team Selection (OITS) concluded on 14th March. The top 10 pairs (Tony Nunn-Paul Dalley, Warren Lazer-Pauline Gumby, David Weston-Julian Foster, Maurits Van Der Vlugt-Andre Korenhof, Peter Gill-Martin Bloom, Simon Zhang-Wayne Zhu, Liam Milne-Sophie Ashton, and Stephen Williams-Susan Humphries, Nicoleta Giura-Nick Hughes and Nigel Rosendorff-Helen Lowry) will now compete in the F2F Final on 7th - 8th May. May the best pairs triumph!

Some of our Women's Team members took the opportunity to practice in the ITS Swiss Pairs which was held in parallel. Giselle Mundell (playing with Michael Courtney) was the winner, while Women's Team representatives Avril Zets and Helena Dawson came second. Congratulations!
Now here is a brand new tournament, brought to you by the NSWBA! The NSW Online Pairs League is open to all bridge players, with separate divisions for players at every level. It is particularly aimed at non-metropolitan players and will be played on the RealBridge platform. We plan to start the full-fledged competition on 7th July. Meanwhile, here is a trial event:
The trial will be four 12-board matches, one match per week, separate NS and EW fields, scored as cross IMPs, commencing Thursday 28th April at 7:30pm. Registration fee $5 per player. Please enter via MyABF. Get in on the ground floor for this event!

To better understand situations that arise when a director is called, Matthew McManus has explained several of them in detail, together with the reasons behind the rulings. His articles are written from the perspective of players – you may find them helpful in your quest to be a better congress player. Review his columns here >
CONGRESS PSYCHE REGISTER
The NSWBA has established a central psyche register for all congresses held in NSW.

The laws permit players to deviate from their systemic agreements so long as the partner of the player who does so has no greater reason to be aware of this deviation than the opponents. Once your partnership has a history of deviating from its agreements in a certain situation you are required to inform your opponents of this tendency.

If you feel that your opponents have psyched against you, please email details of the hand to the psyche register – no action will be taken against players who are reported to the psyche register but once a pair has multiple entries in the psyche register, congress directors will be informed so that they are aware of this history when making their rulings.

A form which can be used for submissions is available HERE.
